Pics from the Road

Here are some shots from the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's The Road. It's Stars Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, and Kodi Smit-McPhee as the boy. It will be released this November.

I think Viggo is a good choice for the the father and the images look appropriately grim enough. The Road is about love, and it's about survival, but don't call it post-apocalyptic sci-fi because the masses would never enjoy anything like that.

  1. I don't remember Strider hugging Frodo like that.

  3. CM has said that he got the theme for the book after thinking about a comet striking the Earth, and the resulting devasation that would ensue from the dust in the atmosphere.

That said. The movie will come out on November 26 somewhere in the Milky Way Galaxy . Here are some pre-screening faux reviews:

“A film that glows with the intensity of Hillcoat’s huge gift for
movie-making…..Why see this?….Because in its lapidary
transcription of the deepest despair short of total annihilation we
may ever see on screen, the movie announces the triumph of hope — and
    love — over nothingness.”

    GUESS WHO WILL SAY THAT?

    And: other critics will write:

    A

“THE ROAD is a wildly powerful and disturbing movie that exposes
whatever black bedrock lies beneath grief and horror. Disaster movies
have never felt more physically and spiritually real. Bravo, John
Hillcoat!” — GUESS WHO WILL WRITE THAT?

    B

“The Road is the logical culmination of everything that Cormac
McCarthy has written and it’s transformation into a Hollywood movie is
nothing short of stunning. You come out of the movie theater a changed
    person. It’s that powerful!”

    C

“It’s hard to think of an apocalyptic tale as beautifully and
hauntingly filmed as this one. The script posses a massive, Biblical
cadence and Hillcoat unleashes it on his actors with painterly effect.
It will grip even the coldest human heart.”

    D

“Devastating. The human predicament has never been more at home, more
eloquent than in the sere, postapoca ash land of THE ROAD the movie.
Extraordinarly lovely and sad, a Hollywood classic-to-be.”

    and E:

“Hillcoast has brilliantly captured the knife edge that fugitives in a
hostile world stand on……Amid this Godot-like bleakness on
celluloid, the film shares something vital and enduring about the
boy’s spirit, his father’s love and the nature of bravery itself.
Hollywood doesn’t get much better than this. Be prepared, be very
    prepared.”

  5. This should cheer me up after my Peak Oil readings.

    I will not call it post-apocalyptic sci-fi, but I WILL call it pre-apocalyptic poly-sci.

  6. I think if you watch this film, you're going to have to watch Pan's Labyrinth and listen to The Sunset Tree just to cheer yourself up.

  7. Hopefully this film will find box office success and lead to more dark, depressing flicks and less Kung Fu Pandas. Oh, who am I kidding.

  8. Snab – did you watch the extended addition?

LB you might want to try the book, chicks dig it.

Danny – wow that’s a lot of positive reviews for a movie that’s not even finished yet. But I do think the book deserves much praise. I love how it turns the whole post-apocalyptic genre on its head.

EW – lol, I hope you don’t get too down in the dumps! It’s a good book too; I think the deceivably simple storytelling will make for a good movie adaptation.

OD – You’re just gonna have to power your engines on the power of love man

Arkonbey – You will have to do something that’s for sure.

Randal – Well we can hope for more of a balance right? Maybe not…
