More Evidence that Star Trek Will Suck?

An article here notes that Star Trek is not tracking with the 18-25 group... it doesn't look good folks.

We can't be sure at this point but this is another sign to be worried.

I don't think the film will please the old guard nor will attract a new audience.

This film is made by a man the doesn't like Star Trek for The Hills crowd. Star Trek seems to be a reimagining that dumbs it down rather than lifting up.

Hey I could be wrong but I haven't seen one thing yet that gives me any hope...

OK maybe there is some Zachary Quinto as Spock love but that's as far as it goes.

If I'm wrong I'll cop to it, but it's looking more and more like we're getting a turkey in the vein of Phantom Menace

You might be right, but I would really be careful about throwing around Phantom Menaces on films. You have to be at a certain level of Epic Fail Suckitude to create a Phantom Menace. You have to have not made a movie for 20 years, and then decide to make one for your adopted kids. It takes a special alignment of suck for the Star Wars prequels to happen. It's like a rare solar eclipse of suck during a solar suck flare on a holy suck day.

Swiney, Swiney, Swiney.

Didn't you read any of the reviews from that Austin crowd of HARDCORE TOS fans who showed up to see WOK and wound up getting to see the new film in it's entirety? They fucking loved the thing.

From what I've read the thing is stuffed full with references to the original series. In fact - as a member of the "old guard" I'm fairly certain that there will be a lot of in jokes where I'll be the only one laughing in the theater.

Here's what I need the movie to do to work for me-

1) Get the Kirk/ Spock/ McCoy relationship right.
2) Throw red mean to the fans of the old show. Tribbles, drop kicks and Courage's music.
3) Action and Trek technobabble.
4) Kirk needs to bag a babe. Hopefully a green one.
5) Plot, etc.
6) Stay true to Roddenberry's vision. By that I mean his overall vision of a positive future, I'm not going to be a continuity nazi.

Anyways, I'm so excited to see this new flick I'm going to KUFO's Stovakor/ Red Shirt promotion at the Mission tomorrow night in the off chance to win tickets to an early screening. (I suspect KUFO may be planning something cooler, along the lines of what happened in Austin but Klingon Heavy Metal never killed anybody if I'm wrong.)

BTW: If this movie sucks I'll say so. I won't give a half-assed thumb's up like I did with Crystal Skull just because I loved what came before so much.

Like Overdroid I'm flabbergasted at the "Phantom Menace" thing pre-release of the film. That's the high bar of suckiness, I don't think you should be using it loosely. :)

Finally- who the hell cares if 18-25 year olds aren't going to see the flick? When did we start using those knuckleheads as a gauge of quality? The number one film at the box office right now is Zac Efron in "17 Again."

I still stand by my original decision to not see any of Lucas' 2nd trilogy of Star Wars films (tho I did see a trailer or two..)...I just had a feeling it would ruin the "feeling" of Han, Luke and Leia - kind of like when you read the book, and the movie doesn't live up to the visuals you already made up in your head, ya know?

However, I'm not getting that vibe from this movie, so I'm going to give it a chance.

and I might have to do it again, and again, and again!

The funny thing is that, although "Phantom Menace" left me scratching my head at the asinine depths Lucas sank to for his kids' sake, it's still the only one of the prequels I still feel tempted to pop in the DVD player on occasion simply because, unlike "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith", the annoying parts don't overpower the fun to watch parts. "Star Trek: Nemesis" actually pissed me off worse than "Phantom Menace" did.

And the spoiler website I saw for Episode III before seeing the actual movie looked so cool...

I saw the picture 2 weeks ago. The picture is positively great. It is a masterful combination of Trek lore and modern cgi action. Those who see it will move this picture by word of mouth. It is probably the best thing J J Abrams has ever done.
