DEMOCRAT NO MORE!

Hi folks, I've been busy with the new place post move and work has been crazy but I wanted to let you know how I've been feeling. It's seems that Dean Wormer and I have come to the same conclusion at about the same time. See his excellent post here.

I didn't think we'd get all the progressive stuff we wanted, maybe 50% (and I would have taken even 25%), but to get absolutely NOTHING! It's simply just too much. All the political capital that has been wasted in the last year coddling conservatives, insurance lobbyists and the list goes on.

I'm done with 'em 'cause the Dems really don't give a crap about the folks in their own party. So maybe if I leave it they'll start paying attention. ...Yeah right.

All that hope... and now it's gone...

PS I'm also pissed because Dean is gonna post all his pop and entertainment news on his own blog now 'cause he can't bring himself to talk politics anymore. grrrrr

I'm not expecting miracles from Obama but let's enjoy this great moment.

It's one for the ages.

Born On Krypton

When Barack Obama jokingly said "Contrary to the rumors you have heard, I was not born in a manger. I was actually born on Krypton and sent here by my father, Jor-el, to save the planet Earth," at the Al Smith Dinner, it reminded me of a black Superman character from 1999. In Legends of the DC Universe: Crisis on Infinite Earths #1, long time fans were treated to a lost chapter from the famous maxi-series Crisis on Infinite Earths. In this comic, an interesting universe was depicted which featured ethnically diverse versions of several regular DC Superheroes, such as a Japanese Flash, a black Superman, a Middle Eastern Wonder Woman and a Native American Green Arrow. This world had silver age storytelling sensibilities but with a contemporary multi-cultural dynamic.

What’s more interesting (and coincidental) is that the Superman of this earth had a round S-symbol and he was married to a Super-Girl who wasn’t his cousin.

And what was the name of this alternate world? “Earth D

Heh Heh I think it’s a good year to be a Democrat. Could this the dawning of Earth D?

Oh and on a side note, there was an “Earth R” too. It was a world created by the villain Despero and it was populated with Reptilian lifeforms… I guess that figures.

What's Up McCain?

I caught a little of Chris Mathew’s show Hardball on MSNBC. He was talking about the third debate between Barack Obama and John McCain when he compared the two of them to Looney Tunes Characters. Obama was Bugs Bunny and McCain was Elmer Fudd.

Suddenly it all makes sense.

Quick Comic Reviews

I’ve been very busy with the taking care of Swinebread Jr. – as if you couldn’t tell from my lack of responses to all of your wonderful comments but I’m going to do a few quick reviews of SOME of what I’ve had time to read the last two weeks.

Necronomicon #2
This continues to be a great mythos series. Longtime readers of Lovecraftian horror will really enjoy the various entities that make their cameos herein. The real origin of Abdul Alhazred is a sinister treat. Also, I love that Necronomicon is set in the 1920s and how Henry Said is socially corrupted by western ways just as he is spiritually corrupted by the Necronomicon itself. I’ll have to see were this mini-series ends up but this just might be the best Cthulhu Mythos storyline published by Boom yet.

The Twelve # 12
The Twelve continues after a break and the plot thickens but then it thickens every issue doesn’t it. Finally, there’s something for Electro to do and it seems the Blue Blade has discovered the robot’s secrets. Also, the Fiery Mask’s origin might be more than it seems… I feel a retcon coming on. I’m greatly pleased with the Twelve but if you’re looking for lots of superhero fistfights you might want to look elsewhere. Happily, interaction of the “out of time” heroes is exactly want I want. Plus, I think Dynamic Man may be a Red herring, Kid Miracle-Man.

Barack Obama #1
This title is little more than a recitation of facts but it’s a nice read for a quick bio on Obama. It’s actually interesting to see Obama’s life laid out in comic book form and the various players from the political sphere rendered as comic characters is a refreshing dose of non-escapism. Folks that have read his books and watched the news won’t find much new here but I did learn a few things about him that I didn’t know. This title does mention some of the controversies surrounding the candidate as well but without context it seems kinda strange.

The Crossed #1
Looking for a good post-apocalyptic horror title? Then look no further than Crossed by Garth Ennis. This title doesn’t pull any punches and is very graphic. Crossed is sure as hell scary. Apparently a mental plague or some sort that turns folks into psycho killers has infected the world. Not for the faint of heart as no one is spared.

Giant Size Red Sonja #2
It’s great to read Sonja stories by Roy Thomas, Clara Noto and Frank Thorne. Ah the good old days. Thorne’s “The Wizard and Red Sonja Show” is fun homage to the shows that Frank and the Red Sonja gals used to put on back in the 1970s. One of the Sonja’s even looks like Wendy Pini. Also, Red Sonya of Rogatino makes an appearance too. I guess Paradox Entertainment and Red Sonja LLC have worked out their differences.

Star Trek Mirror Images #4
A fun issue all around. Kirk’s plot to assassinate Pike hits a bump in the road but he turns it to his advantage. Hey IDW, more Mirror Universe comics.

Marvel Zombies 3 #1
I like the parallel monitoring agency and the idea that Machine Man has to be one of the guys to investigate the zombie-verse but I hate that fact that Machine Man has to be this Human looking Aaron Stack guy. I liked him better when he was more of a robot.

Savage Sword of Conan #4
I drop everything and read these collections when Dark Horse puts them out. I love 'em! I think I might have convinced Dear Wormer to pick them up.

The End League #5
I don't like the new artist's style... it's gone

Obama and His Amazing Friends

I try not to get carried away with politics on this blog but this week, Barack Obama has secured the democratic nomination. His team deserves kudos for their efforts, but I am a little worried about the scorched earth that occurred during the primary. Nonetheless, It’s an important week for the Democrats and Obama and I’m looking forward to the general election.

One of the fun facts I learned about the Democratic nominee this week, amid all the hoopla, is that Obama collected Conan and Spiderman comics… Now, as a comic geek, that gives me alotta’ hope that we can turn things around.

I voted

Some folks often slam the vote by mail system we have in Oregon but I just sat in my living-room, with no clothes on, and filled out my ballot. How awesome is that?!

I get to vote when I want, take as much time as I want, and be in any state of undress that I want while I'm selecting my candidates. Yeah!

I've been voting absentee long before Oregon went all vote by mail, so my state's system is a prefect fit for me.

Try absentee and Vote Naked you'll be glad you did.

(of course I had to put some clothes on to drop my ballot in the mailbox)

Presidents Day

A few of my favorite Fictional Presidents:

President Tom Beck
"Life will go on, we will prevail." -Deep Impact

President Steve Rodgers
Captain America as President? What could be more American than that!
-What If, vol. 1 #26

President Thomas J. Whitmore
“Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!” - Independence Day. Want to know what fantasy land the republicans are living in? This is it!

President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho
“Shit. I know shit's bad right now, with all that starving bullshit, and the dust storms, and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings. But I got a solution.” -Idiocracy

Unnamed President played by Donald Pleasance
“You’re the Duke of New York! You’re “A” Number One!”-Escape From New York

President Travis Morgan
A former Pilot and sword & Sorcery champion from a Pelucidar-like world travels to a post-apocalyptic future and overthrows what’s left of corrupt US government. He frees slaves, becomes President, and then travels back in time to stop the nuclear war from happening in the first place. Now that’s what I’d call a proactive executive. -Warlord #84

President Merkin Muffley
“Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room.” – Dr. Strangelove

President Margaret Valentine
“…I’m President of the United States and I said Drop You’re Goddam Weapons” -Y that Last Man

President Kenneth Yamaoka
“That’s a Dangerous thought. A powerful few could crush the dreams of the majority” –Eagle: the Making of an Asian American President.
