Quick Comic Reviews

Brothers in Arms
Probably the best War Comic I’ve ever read although I haven’t read a lot to be honest. If you’re into WWII action this is the place to be. With the 4th issue we’re at D-Day +1 and not everything is going according to plan, in fact the airborne troops are mostly wiped out in this one. Excellent plotting by Neumann and Wohl; we’re not told how to feel about the horrors of combat… we’re shown. I’m also enjoying the accuracy of the arms, uniforms and equipment without the Fetishization of them. If you want something akin to Saving Private Ryan in comic form, this is it.

Army of Darkness 14
If there was an Army of Darkness TV show, I bet the plot of one of the episodes would look a lot like this issue. Ash is back from time traveling… again and figures he’s gotta’ separate himself and the Necronomicon from the rest of humanity. Sadly, a couple of forest rangers interfered with those plans. The last panel reminded me of horrors that were unleashed in ROM #56. This is a mostly transitional issue that leads into a new storyline. Also, I don’t usually like comic art with a slightly cartoony touch but it works for me in this title.

Xena/Army of Darkness #1
Things go from corny to cornball with this first issue of the second Crossover of Xena and AoD. Ash went back in time in the last outing so now we get the reverse with Xena. My thoughts: A little too much exposition perhaps? I mean really, who didn’t pick up the first crossover that’s not gonna pick up this one? I know this is gonna have more laughs but maybe dynamite should have made this a 5-issue mini to make up for the exposition we are forced to go through. Mig’s art is serviceable but not great. A weak opening to a great concept.

Hulk #7
First off let me say I’m not a fan of Arthur Adams manga-ish art style and I’m certainly not a fan of the Grey Hulk and the psychological mumbo jumbo he represents but that’s what we get in the first of two stories in Hulk #7. I’m much more interested in the second story that centers around She-hulk forming a team to battle the Red Hulk. Frank Cho’s art is wonderful in this second story and it’s just makes more sense plot wise. So this issue is half good and half bad.

She-Hulk #34
Hey Marvel! Grow a pair… I don’t think you’re going to loose any readers in Burma or create political problems by actually setting the story in Myanmar. I’m really sick of fake countries. If you want to make a statement about human suffering then make it and stop pussyfooting around. That said, I enjoyed the implication from Thundra that maybe She-hulk and Jazinda should be lovers. I also like the fact that Thundra’s costume is still the same style she’s worn since the 1970s. Not everything needs to be updated. The last page reveal was cool too as I like this super group a lot.

Quick Comic Reviews

I haven’t even had a chance to pick up my comics for this week but here’s a few opinions on last week's stack.

Cthulhu Tales 5
This was an entertaining issue basically for the second story about Dr. Nyarlathotep. This tale is an obvious nod to a dream that H.P. Lovecraft had about a creepy sideshow magician named Nyarlathotep. This dream is the origin of the name Nyarlathotep by the way. I thought Boom’s interpretation of this wizard of Magnetism was horrifically fun and recalled a more whimsical time in horror stories.

Fall of Cthulhu: GodWar #2
Various characters from the previous Fall of Cthulhu series fall-in together as the war Between Nyarlathotep and Nodens begins to tear into the real world with devastating consequences. The more the story threads are gathered, the more the horror grows. The main characters are in way over their heads and they don’t’ even know it yet. This title is putting me on edge like a good horror flick or classic game session of Call of Cthulhu.

Northlanders #10
What we have here is essentially the second part of a story about a traitor, a boy who sells out his family and town to the Vikings in trade for a life as a warrior. It’s kinda hard to take but then life and death in the middle ages was very brutal. It’s strangely compelling to read a traitor’s story where the traitor succeeds.

She-Hulk #33
I remember when the Skrulls were short ugly aliens. Jazinda, She-Hulk’s Skull-friend, is just too hot. Basically she looks like a sexy 20 something with a ripple chin and green skin. Ahhh no. We already have one green skinned chick sticking her juicy ass out of the panels and we don’t need another. Sometimes aliens should just be the classic evil threat and not sympathetic. The art in this issue is great but She-Hulk seemed like a supporting character in her own title. Super Skrull is always good for a spectacular bashing though.

Hulk #6
This Hulk title has been a good series so far. I’ve enjoyed not knowing who the Red Hulk is and the appearances by the supporting cast are well done. Also, I think She-Hulk’s characterization is better here then in her own comic. Issue six really comes together in showing Hulk as not so bad when compared to the monsters that are always created to fight him. That’s classic hulk and that works. This isn’t a bunch psychological mumbo jumbo, it’s just straight up Hulk Smash. I’m not real familiar with what’s been going on with the Hulk stories so I’ve got no guesses on who the Red Hulk might be, but it is fun not having all the answers… as long as he doesn’t turn out to be a Skrull that is.

Foxxy She-Hulk

The other day, between feedings and diaper changes, my mother-in-law, and my wife were relaxing while I scanned through cable channels. At one point I came upon Disney 2, which was showing the Incredible Hulk cartoon from the 1990s. Now, I’ve never seen this show because I was outta the country at the time it aired, so I’ve always been interested in it because the 2nd Season starred She-Hulk. The particular episode that was showing did have Shulkie and it was fun to see her in action. Apparently, Jennifer went home for her high school reunion and all broke hell broke lose when the Gargoyle’s minions attacked. He was in love with her and the Gargoyle thought he could force her to be his lover (makes me wonder what the Silver Age Hulk tales would have been like if She-Hulk had been around then).

Anyhoo, my wife and my mother-in-law actually watched the cartoon for a little bit. They found She-Hulk intriguing. My SO remarked, “wow! She’s really tall,” and then she explained to her mom that She-Hulk was the female Hulk in Japanese while making a few more comments. This was fun for me because my wife has seen me read the She-Hulk comics but has always tuned me out when I talked about the character before. I guess it’s another thing entirely to see She-Hulk in action even if it’s just a cartoon. I hope that Shulkie will be in the next Hulk movie that way more folks will get see how cool she really is.

After watching that episode for a while I realized that I’ve heard She-Hulk’s voice before. Rather quickly, I recognized that She-Hulk had the same voice talent as Foxxy Love from Drawn Together… minus the jive of course. Cree Summer provides the voice work for both characters. I’m thinking It would be fun if She-Hulk did have Foxxy’s speech patterns though, imagine She-Hulk saying: "Hey Hey Hey" or “I'm like Sherlock Holmes, if he played tambourine and shaved his cooch.” Hmmmm… sounds like a good idea for a youtube.

Hulk Need Carbs

(Sorry, I’ve been very busy folks.) My chance to see the Incredible Hulk slipped away this weekend and I’m not sure I’ll get another anytime soon, but it posted a solid opening at the box office. Hopefully it’s on tract to make a profit for Marvel Studios, as I’d like to see more of their films.

I noticed an odd ad in Hulk: Raging Thunder, The Hulk Cake. I’ve seen lots of stuff advertised in comics but I don’t’ think I've ever seen a theme cake before (and no hostess fruit pies don’t count).

Tim Roth Speaks about his role in the Incredible Hulk

Tim's a cool guy and lends some validity to the villian in the film, of course I'll have to see Incredible Hulk first to be sure.

In related Hulk news, did you know that Captain America was supposed be in The Incredible Hulk? Well he's been cut out.
from here
In an interview with SOS Hollywood, Leterrier said, “There’s a point when Bruce Banner gives up on his quest for the cure and decide to kill himself. So he travels far North and reaches the Arctic Circle. You might have seen bits of it in some of the promos. The result was a very dark and strong scene, which Marvel, me and everyone else’s considered to be too hard to young audiences to take, so we’ve cut it. Having that said, when Bruce arrives at his destination he meets up with Captain America! At some point this week, we will make it available on the internet – but I cannot tell you where or when – and the material will definitely be on the DVD.”

Hulk Good...?

The buzz on the Incredible Hulk is out... and it’s good!

Except for one or two quiet moments shared by Banner and his girlfriend while on the lam, Incredible Hulk doesn’t waste a single frame on dull talky exposition. It is all plot-driven and action-filled. In fact, unlike the much-hyped Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Incredible Hulk never runs out of steam. Put simply: this is the movie which audiences wanted to see back in 2003. No dull existential angst and weird split screen film techniques. No mutant poodles either. Instead we get some nice comic asides, including another cameo by Stan Lee and a riff on those mega-stretchy purple pants Banner always seems to wear.

With The Incredible Hulk Marvel has done it again. Like the recent Iron Man, Incredible Hulk is a definite Saturday matinee crowd-pleaser. Kids – and their parents – will love it. Unfortunately the only thing standing in the way of Incredible Hulk becoming the summer hit it deserves to be will be audiences’ negative memories of the 2003 original. Well, forget about all that: The Incredible Hulk may ultimately be as brainless as its main character, but it really is “incredible” this time around. And Hulk smashes stuff too . . .
from here

I was very angry with the first film in that Ang Lee completely missed the point of the character and tried to do some boring psycho babble story that wasn't in the spirit of the comics or the Hulk character. The Hulk is the most straightforward superhero of the marvel universe and putting layers of drama over the top of him is unnecessary and dull. Hulk has all the drama he needs just being himself. The Hulk comic has an amazing collection of villains and the fact that none of them were used in the first film shows you that the director didn't have a clue... a gamma poodle? Please. Lee's fiasco delayed a Hulk franchise by years. I'm glad Marvel decided to take a chance and remake the Hulk before his horrible version had faded from pop memory. The sooner we get a successful Hulk series of films the sooner we get a She-Hulk.

The fanboys (and girls) simply want "Hulk Smash" is that troo much to ask for?

Marvel Studios hit a homer with Iron Man, so lets hope they have resurrected the big o' mean and green from the grave.

The Incredible Hulk Trailer

The new trailer for the Incredible Hulk is out. The fact that whole franchise is rebooted is good news. It looks like the Hulk gets an actual supervillain instead of his dad and a giant poodle this time.

They can make the comic, the TV show or a combination of both; just don't make anything like the Ang Lee version. Lets hope Hulk has some Wrath of Khan magic for his second big screen outing. Also, there better be a "HULK SMASH" in this movie someplace!

Of course the Incredible Hulk has to be a success because if it isn't then we'll never get a She-Hulk. Shulkie would make for a fantabulous character in the next film… …and then they can do a Fantastic Four crossover... oh the possibilities.
