Sorry I've been absent from the blog but Swinebread Jr. has been pretty sick. There is so much I want to talk about and I haven't even been able to... I still need to post about the Stumptown Comics Fest. :(

Just when when I think my son is getting better, he relapses again. :(

Also, I wanna thank Dean Wormer for keep things going around here. :)

Fat Necks and Skin Suits

I saw this ad in one of my DC comics and I was just floored. I just hate this style of drawing. I’ll never understand why this is so popular. Look at Supes and Icon. They both have huge monstrous necks with hyper-detailed steroid muscles that impossibly show through their costumes. This is just plain ugly. When I started reading comics, these body types would have been a joke or a parody but now they are often the standard look.

I dunno, maybe folks illustrate like this to disguise the fact that they don’t really know how to draw in the first place… …like Rob Liefeld, the godfather of crap illustration. Here’s my advice, look at the body shapes of Navy Seals and Delta Force guys. That is what someone looks like who is really in shape.

Everybody Wants to See the Baby

We’ve been keeping Swinebread Jr. at home and away from the crowds. He’s been putting on a lot weight and he’s starting to look like a Rubenesque Cherub. We had a small medical scare yesterday but our little one is completely healthy and happy, so no worries.

It’s funny because the baby on this Alien Encounters cover almost looks like Swinebread Jr. I’ve observed that expression from him several times already. Hmmm… I wonder what he’s really seeing when he does his baby gawk.

4 Color Melancholia in Black and White

pic from http://www.myspace.com/thecomicbooklady

Got the comic book blues? You're not alone. The Comic Book Lady has got it bad and with the awful husband and crappy cutomers you can see why.
Shot on 16mm in black and white, The Comic Book Lady follows ten days in the life of a comics store owner (Kathleen Jackson) who is dealing with trouble on the home front and ongoing eccentricities on the professional side. The film is set to screen June 11th at England’s International Film Festival and June 20th and the San Antonio Film Festival.

The movie was written and directed by store employee Shayne Barker, who began scripting the project in 2002 and shooting it with Miller in 2004. "We shot some initial test shots in color, but the Comic Book Lady character in the film is depressed," Miller tells the paper. "The comics in the background made things so colorful that it really didn't convey a feeling of depression. So we switched to the black-and-white film, which not only did a better job of conveying the feel of the film, it was also cheaper to purchase and process."
