What Book Are You?

You're Watership Down!

by Richard Adams

Though many think of you as a bit young, even childish, you're
actually incredibly deep and complex. You show people the need to rethink their
assumptions, and confront them on everything from how they think to where they
build their houses. You might be one of the greatest people of all time. You'd
be recognized as such if you weren't always talking about talking rabbits.

Take the Book Quiz

Maybe it's all those Captain Carrot, Bugs Bunny, and Usagi Yojimbo stories I've been into.

Captain Carrot Maintains Some Momentum

Scott Shaw passed along an announcement by DC (here) that a Captain Carrot trade is coming out.

"CAPTAIN CARROT AND THE FINAL ARK TP
Written by Bill Morrison, Roy Thomas and E. Nelson Bridwell
Art by Scott Shaw, Ross Andru, Rick Hoberg, Al Gordon and others
Cover by Shaw & Morrison
Captain Carrot returns in this volume collecting the 3-issue miniseries in which the Zoo Crew faces a threat that begins at the “Sandy Eggo Comic-Con!” Plus, adventures from The New Teen Titans #16 and Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew #1 and #14-15!
Advance-solicited; on sale April 2 • 168 pg, FC, $19.99 US"

Now, this is not the full-blown Showcase Presents that would have reprinted every issue of the original Captain Carrot run, which was cancelled incidentally. That was the book I was so excited about, just so you know. What we’ve got collected here are: the new, 3 issue mini and just few stories that seem most relevant to countdown. Although it’s in color… I’ve already got these in comic form, so I’m a little conflicted. To me, it seems like the other animal superhero adventures will never see the light of day again. That would be sad. However, this collection does prove that there is some level of support for the zoo crew within DC and with the general public and that is absolutely a good thing. We all could use a lot more fun in our funny books.

If you bought an issue of Captain Carrot and the Final Ark, thanks from a fan.

My New Comics

This week’s best cover is The Astounding Wolf-Man #4.

Spiderman/Red Sonja #5, Dynamite Entertainment/Marvel Comics.

Streets of Glory #3, Avatar. I'm enjoying this western gore-fest

Battlestar Galactica: Origins #1, Dynamite Entertainment.

Captain Carrot and the Final Ark #3, DC Comics. I knew the Justa' Lotta Animas were gonna show up!.. (Because one of them is on the cover duh). Plus, I was strangely satisfied with the ending. Grant Morrison would be proud.

The Engineer #1, Archaia Studio Press. Impulse buy, Looked weird, so I thought I’d check it out.

The Walking Dead #45, Image.

The Astounding Wolf-Man #4, Image. I don’t know why I didn’t pick up the first few issues of this series as Robert Kirkman writes it. Oh well.

Bat Lash #1, DC Comics.

The Un-Men #5, Vertigo/DC Comics.

Living with the Dead #3, Dark Horse Comics.

My New Comics

This week’s best cover is Captain Carrot and the Final Ark #1. Of Course. Duh!

Black Summer #3, Avatar.

Star Trek: Alien Spot Light: The Gorn #1, IDW.

The Amazing Spider-girl #13, Marvel Comics. Looks like a I gotta’ read a Spider-Girl comic to get a decent Spider-man-like story.

Captain Carrot and the Final Ark #1, DC Comics. Wow, they sure packed a lot into this one issue: reintroducing all of the characters, explaining the anthropomorphic world of the zoo crew, lots of in-jokes about the comic industry, overcoming the grim and gritty Zoo Crew that appeared in Teen Titans vol.3, #30-31, and starting a coherent story with many plot points, not to mention using lots of puns. Yeah, there is lot of exposition, but its fun the way they do it. Plus, Scott Shaw is drawing it so that just multiplies the Captain Carrot goodness.

Deadlander #1, Dark Horse Comics. Looks to be a Western with a Zombie Gunfighter.

Suicide Squad #2, DC Comics.

The Un-Men #3, DC Comics.

Living with the Dead #1, Dark Horse Comics. Portland’s own finally offers their own zombie horror comic.

Spiderman/Red Sonja #3, Marvel Comics/Dynamite Entertainment.

Sword of Red Sonja: Doom of the Gods #1, Dynamite Entertainment.

Trade Paperback:
X-men: Days of Future Past Marvel Comics. Reprints X-men #138-143 and X-men Annual #4. This trade has been out for several years but I noticed it on a reorder for the store. I read the Days of Future Past storyline long ago. Heck, I went out and bought issues 141 and 142 as expensive back issues when I was a kid just so I could read ‘em, but the other stories contained in this collection… I never have. Although, I do own that X-men annual in German… This book nicely fills in the gaps at the end of the Dark Phoenix Saga and Kitty joining the team. Plus it’s, I believe, John Byrne’s last artwork on the X-men title. Ah, the good old days…

CAPTAIN CARROT AND THE FINAL ARK Preview

It’s the last few days until the release of the new Captain Carrot mini-series. It’s finally coming out this Wednesday. DC has released a 5 page preview on Newsarama.com here. After more than 20 years, it’s about time. Needless to say, picking up the mini series has become more important than ever since DC recently cancelled the Showcase Presents that collected the original Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew. If this mini-series sells enough issues, I’m sure the DC guys will put the collected adventures back on the schedule for 2008. So, grab your copy of Captain Carrot and help revive the best funny animal superheroes ever… If the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles can have movies than the Zoo Crew can surely have a least a few more comics published.

My New Comics

This week’s best cover is Alter Ego #72. It honors the first appearance of the JLA in The Brave and the Bold #28.

Fall of Cthulhu #6, Boom Studios. New Storyline, New Horrors.

Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters #1, DC Comics. I’m giving this a look-see, as I’m an old fan of Sam.

Marvel Zombies: The Book of Angels, Demons, & Various Monstrosities #2, Marvel Comics. It’s an evil handbook to the Marvel Universe that includes the Zombies.

Terminator 2: Infinity #3, Dynamite Entertainment.

Army of Darkness: From the Ashes #3, Dynamite Entertainment.

Magazine:
Alter Ego #72, Twomorrows Publishing. I’ve been waiting for this retrospective on Captain Carrot!

Game Book:
Conan: The Roleplaying Game 2nd Edition Mongoose Publishing. This core rulebook is published in black and white not color like the previous addition but it’s thicker. Content over esthetic I guess.

Dam You DC!

DC Comics has announced that the following Showcase Presents titles are CANCELLED. from here

Suicide Squad
Secret Society of Super-Villains
Jonah Hex Volume 2
The Great Disaster
Captain Carrot

As you know I was really looking forward to Captain Carrot. Plus, The Great Disaster, and Jonah Hex 2 were must haves for me. I guess DC just couldn’t tolerate the increased reprint rates for the creators.* Dam artists, and writers trying to make a living wage.

ARRRGGH!

I had ordered these guys.

Countdown to Captain Carrot

Captain Carrot, for me, seems to be one of the few bright spots of this Countdown mess. There might be a few more, but as I have pretty much abandoned DCs new comics I wouldn’t know what they are. Well, let the turmoil swirl around the entire multiverse as it get destroyed again, as long as Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew have a chance to shine. The anthropomorphized animal superheroes are back! Yes!. There have been gripes and groans, by some who can’t take a joke, but for me with all the “serious” garbage going on in comics nowadays, it’s nice get into something that is simply fun. …And what’s a big part of fun? Funny, which I’m sure this Zoo Crew resurrection will be.

From DC's site:
The Zoo Crew is back in a 3-issue COUNTDOWN tie-in miniseries! Captain Carrot reunites the team to face a threat that begins at the "Sandy Eggo Comic-Con" and quickly menaces the entire world ! The gang's all here: Fastback, Pig-Iron, Yankee Poodle, American Eagle, Alley-Kat-Abra, and the Captain himself, taking on the Salamandroid!
I only have to wait until October!

Here’s a nice thread at Comic Book Resources with the lowdown. It’s great because Scott Shaw, the artist, is actually answering questions about the series. I’m tired of getting angry or sad when I read comics. I want a big fat smile on my face for a change and I feel, -NO- I believe, this series is gonna do it. I have a sneaky suspicion we will get a good parody of the DC craziness of late. It will be nice to read Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew: the Final Ark. They don't call 'em funny animals for nothing.

Now if we could just get a Captain Carrot-Spider-Ham crossover...!

Oh and don't miss the Showcase Presents collection that reprints the original Zoo Crew issues. It's coming in September. Yes, this is the 3rd time I'm mentioning this. …hmmmm maybe I really want this project to succeed.

EDIT: The SHOWCASE PRESENTS CAPTAIN CARROT HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

Blog Positivity Day...

Rascally Heidi Meeley at Comic Fairplay has put the word out for Blog Positivity Day just to counter some of that negative comics backlash we might be feeling towards the industry. See here for the details.

Well, most of my special comic book moments have already been mentioned in this blog, but I guess I’ve got a few things I'd like to speak to.

Right now I am reading 52 via trade paperback. I decided not to pickup the individual issues, and I discovered it was worth the wait. The tight plotting demanded by the original weekly schedule and the ability to read each story one after another, makes for a satisfying comics experience. Much like having the DVDs to a whole season of a beloved TV show. 52 actually reads like the third season of a series, with Identity Crisis, Countdown to Infinite Crisis, Infinite Crisis and a myriad of other mini-series and issues being the second season (none of this impedes enjoyment though). Of Course the first season would have to be the rest of DC comics history, and Paul Levtiz, in the first story afterword, basically says that 52 is a collaboration across time with all the creators that have ever worked at DC over the years. That’s another thing that I like about the trades too, each issue gets and afterword.

I had given up on crossover stories. I was disappointed with the way Infinite Crisis played out and found most of the lead in and lead out mini-series unsatisfying with little or no story resolutions. I know the ultimate end of the 52 series, that the multiverse is back with 52 alternate universes, but that knowledge isn’t ruining it for me. In fact that’s the reason I decided to pick it up in the first place. I’m an alternate universe kinda guy. Only the first two trades are out now, so the whole series could go to crap but I got the feeling it doesn’t.

After all this blabbing the real positive thing I actually wanted to talk about was the depiction of Batwoman. I remember last year when there was this entire hullabaloo about her being a lesbian. News story after news story speaking about how sensational it was. I groaned to myself thinking it was another gimmick. Well, all these months later I’ve discovered it was really well done and the sensationalism came from the news organizations themselves rather than DC. What really worked for me was the meeting between Renee Montoya and Kate Kane in week 7; the look in their eyes, and the recognition of a deep history between the two really sold the scene for me. I’m a fan of Love and Rockets and the exchange between the two really borrows some of that old school, girl love from Las Locas.

A few other comic book moments:

Volume 12 of the Chronicles of Conan. I’ve read the original Queen of the Black Coast story by Howard, but the death of BĆŖlit in Roy Thomas’ comic adaptation still broke my heart. This trade clinched it for me that Conan the Barbarian is the best mainstream comic book of the 1970s (IMHO).

I am really happy that Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew is getting a new miniseries and past issues are being collected in the Showcase trade.

I have to mention She-Hulk #20 that just came out. That has got to be one of the best covers ever. On top of that, Dan Slott ties up most of the loose ends from his run, which is much appreciated. Most of the book is exposition, but it’s the most entertaining exposition I’ve ever read. Weird Huh!

I’m totally stoked for the Great Disaster collection as well. I’ve always wanted to read the Atomic Knights stories and Hercules Unbound as well. Wild and Wahoo post-apocalyptic adventures are the best!

Happy 4th of July

Happy 4th from Yankee Poodle!

She's one of the team members from Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew, a guilty pleasure of mine from the 80s. Incidentally you’ll be able to read the adventures of Yankee and the rest of the crew in September when most of their adventures get collected into a Showcase Presents. Oh Yeah! Gotta have my anthropomorphic superheroes.

So fire up the grill, take in the fireworks and have a safe and fun holiday.

Also, if you are not from the US, I’d like to apologize for the Jackass that's ruining our country and has no respect for the Constitution. Hopefully, we’ll get our nation back so we can be part of the solution, rather than part of the problem. Sorry I just had to get political for a moment. Patriotic “events” do that to me.
